Item broken during shipping or by seller??
Would love some support on this:
Here is a summary of what happened with a recent transaction that I believe were caused by a failure in eBay's shipping system, and which have resulted in significant time loss for both myself and the buyer, as well as a disputed item outcome.
Here is a summary of what occurred:
1. INCORRECT LABEL PROVIDED: The shipping label generated by eBay was not sized appropriately for the item being shipped — a large, heavy chair valued at $500. USPS refused the package at drop-off because it exceeded size requirements for the label class provided. eBay should have known this based on the size on the listing.Â
2. TRACKING FAILURE: The label also failed to update with tracking information, causing confusion and communication delays with the buyer for 2 weeks before it was finally delivered.Â
3. SELLER BURDEN: I spent hours on the phone with eBay support and USPS daily attempting to resolve these issues, time and effort that far exceeded the value of the item. The support has been a game of dropped calls, pointing the finger at others (USPS to report the item missing, broke, yet the have no record since the tracking was never updated).
4. REQUIRED REPACKAGING: To finally ship the item at all, it had to partially disassemble and repackage the chair to comply with USPS requirements. This was a direct consequence of the incorrect label.
5. BUYER IMPACT: The buyer has reported being unable to reassemble the chair and is describing missing parts. I dont know enough about how it works to know what is missing or what the issues are. The disassembly required for shipping was necessitated entirely by eBay's label error, this was not seller negligence.Â
I acted in good faith at every step. The item was in perfect condition before shipping. The root cause of this dispute is a systemic failure on eBay's part to match shipping label parameters to item dimensions.Â
How can we resolve this? I think that eBay should take responsibility for this outcome and work with both myself and the buyer toward a fair resolution, including consideration of seller protections given the circumstances.
Thank you for you help!
