Is it not possible to rate a seller anymore without also rating the item you bought from them?
So, I receive periodic reminders from eBay (not from the sellers) to review items I've purchased. In the past, I could rate the seller on the interaction itself - whether it went smoothly, and if the item arrived on time, for example. But now, the same invitations for feedback seem to force me to rate the item itself at the same time. And the thing is, sometimes I have no ability to rate the item at that moment, given that I won't have finished evaluating it until I've actually used it... and often the opportunity for me to rate the seller goes away before that. SO, I have a question, and I really hope someone can answer it clearly, because I've contacted eBay representatives about this multiple times and gotten a range of extremely confusing answers (everything from people who didn't understand what I was trying to ask, to someone vaguely affirming that it's not possible to rate a seller separately but that "the seller should have sent you a separate invitation to leave them feedback," to someone on the phone saying "just a moment" over and over while I waited for fifteen minutes, periodically asking them "are you still there?"). (Needless to say, I currently have zero faith in eBay representatives.)
Is it possible to just rate the seller - the interaction - the purchasing process itself - and NOT be forced to rate the item at the same time? Or has eBay changed it so that in order to rate the seller, I also have to rate the item? If they've made this change to force me to rate the item, too, I'm just going to stop rating anything and everything, altogether, because tying them together in a single system bothers me, a lot.

That thing where you have to choose a number from 1 to 5 for the product? I agree that it's aggravating but I don't let that stop me, I just pick a number ... unless I'm certain about the item, I pick 1. I figure that if there are enough low ratings, sales of that item will suffer – thereby reducing eBay commissions – and eBay will discontinue the product rating. I do not expect overnight results from my strategy.

OP1 year agoYeah, I refuse to participate in a feedback system if it's poorly made. I'd rather first try communicating in words, rather than manipulating the system and potentially causing horror stories for innocent parties.
Still waiting for an answer from someone who knows what's actually going on (but thank you for your input).

Mentor1 year agoI don't make many purchases on ebay, but the last time I did, I simply skipped over the product rating and was able to leave feedback for the seller.

OP1 year agoDo you remember when that was? As of the last few months, I was unable to skip over the questions asking me to rate the item itself. They were mandatory.

If that's your choice, fine. Feedback is voluntary, so it's completely up to you.

In what regard? I've left feedback for every purchase I ever made, except one, a total of 1,530 feedbacks, so I think I have a pretty good handle on that. Maybe I couldn't understand the question.

OP1 year agoIn what regard? To clarify, I'm hoping to hear from someone who either works for eBay or, even if they don't, someone who knows precisely what is going on in terms of the surveys - someone who know more than either you or I do, apparently.
To restate my question, the surveys from eBay seem to force us to rate the ITEM in addition to the TRANSACTION. This is a change from the past, where the only questions asked in the survey from eBay referenced the transaction, not the item, at least if I am recalling correctly.
And as I tried to say before, I have gotten mixed, confused, and contradictory responses from eBay employees on the phone and by chat. Something seems screwed up if nobody employed by eBay is available to give a straightforward answer.

Rating the item with a number of stars from one to five is voluntary. You can skip that part and still leave feedback for the transaction (which is also voluntary). At one point the item rating was not optional, and if you wanted to leave feedback you had to rate the item as well, but eBay has since changed that to make it optional and separate.
eBay has changed the wording on the feedback page, making it sound like you are rating the product ("Tell us about this item"), but the comment appears on the seller's feedback page just as it always has in the past.
