Is eBay Actually Reviewing Seller Evidence When Asked to Step In on a Return Request?
Summary: gmaxx22 expresses concern about eBay's handling of Seller Protection cases, sharing experiences where eBay ruled in favor of buyers quickly despite evidence provided beforehand. They question whether these cases receive a human review and describe a pattern of receiving inadequate explanations. They appeal for feedback and clarification from others or a representative, stressing the need for a more transparent and fair process.
Is eBay actually reviewing seller evidence anymore when asked to step in?
I am genuinely asking because this has now happened to me three separate times.
In all three cases, a buyer made a claim that was directly contradicted by my listing. I provided documentation showing that the item was accurately described BEFORE asking eBay to step in. All three times, eBay ruled in the buyer's favor in less than five minutes.
After challenging the decisions, eBay ultimately refunded the buyers from eBay's own funds and told me that, "as a courtesy," I would not have to reimburse eBay.
That's not the solution I'm looking for.
If I am wrong, tell me why I'm wrong. If my listing wasn't adequate, tell me what was missing. But if my listing and documentation prove that the buyer received exactly what was advertised, protecting me shouldn't be called a "one-time courtesy." That's what Seller Protection is supposed to do.
And simply refunding the buyer with eBay's money doesn't fix the underlying problem. It just means eBay takes the financial loss instead of the seller.
My biggest concern is the speed of these decisions. Three separate cases, evidence submitted in advance, and decisions issued in less than five minutes. I can't know what internal process eBay used, but that certainly raises the question of whether the evidence is receiving meaningful human review.
Has anyone else noticed this happening recently? And is there an actual eBay employee or Seller Protection representative in the Community who can address whether disputed cases are receiving human review when sellers provide documentation and ask eBay to step in?
This isn't about one return or trying to avoid accepting legitimate returns. I'm concerned about the process itself and what appears to be a significant change in how eBay handles Seller Protection cases.

eBay wants the buyer experience to be smooth. If the buyer says the item is not as described, then eBay accepts that statement and expects the seller to process the return request.
1) Accept the return and issue the label
2) When the item is returned, inspect it
3) Block the Buyer https://www.ebay.com/bmgt/BuyerBlock
4) Report the buyer for misusing the Money Back Guarantee here if appropriate: https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/resolving-buyer-issues/reporting-issue-buyer?id=4084
5) Issue a refund
6) Appeal the case to eBay
