Is Ebay a legitimate marketplace under proper governance?
Summary: colin10 expressed frustration about a canceled order on eBay after purchasing Adidas cleats, which were relisted at a higher price. monroe67 explained that while eBay cannot monitor every seller for honesty, the platform does place defects on sellers who cancel orders with false reasons. Accumulating defects can lead to higher fees for the seller or eventual loss of selling privileges.
I purchased a pair of Adidas Adizero Impact.2K Football Cleats under 'Buy Now' and made full payment. After a couple of days the order was cancelled with the invalid reason that there was an issue with the shipping address. I have received all of my prior purchases without issue. The item is now relisted at more than double the price I paid. The seller has decided a deal is not a deal and found a way out of it by giving a full refund and relisting, is this a valid way to do business on Ebay?

Mentor1 month agoYes, eBay is a legitimate marketplace under proper governance.
Unfortunately, eBay, Inc., does not and cannot investigate every seller for honesty, integrity, and other good qualities.
Once in a while, a seller does go against eBay's policies and cancels a sale with a not-completely-honest reason of "Problem With Address."
What the buyer does not know -- maybe doesn't need to know -- is that eBay will and does place a defect on that seller's record. If he accumulates a certain percentage of defects, he will pay higher final value fees to eBay.
If that seller continues to collect defects from eBay, he'll eventually lose his selling privileges.

OP1 month agoSo there's no real penalty for reneging on an agreement and no way for eBay to deal with this issue. Does eBay publish this policy so it can be policed or is it on eBays whim? Is this the best eBay can do?
