Invalid bid policy

Question

Someone entered a starting bid at $39 for an item I was selling, and then retracted it a few days later, claiming that they "entered the wrong amount". They entered $40, so I'm guessing they decided they didn't want it afterall. What keeps anyone who has committed to buying an item from just claiming they "entered the wrong amount"? It's disappointing to know that anyone can retract a bid at any time with no recourse.

eBay seems to have stopped enforcing the rules against "picking a lie" from the short list of valid reasons to retract a bid about the middle of the last decade. You can try to contact Customer Service and complain, or you could find a brick wall a lot easier with the same effect.

There are not a lot of reasons to choose from when retracting (I think there are only 2), so this is the easiest one for them to choose. It is recorded on their account and you can see this if you know where to look. It doesn't seem to matter though. I saw one who had 133 bid retractions and they were still a member. Don't worry about it!

It is better to have them retract a bid than it is to have them not pay when they win.
