International shipping costs / what cost does buyer pay over my domestic shipping price?
Hello eBayers! I hope everyone had a marvelous Christmas!
Question about international shipping... I showed a low price for domestic shipping. I had a potential buyer in Asia asking about lower shipping price in very broken English before the auction ended. I replied that the shipping price was as stated in the auction. I don't know if eBay adds an extra cost to ship the item internationally, or how this works.
The person did go ahead and bid/won/ paid, and then immediately messaged asking for a refund of shipping cost. They included this note with their payment: #PLS REFUND EXTRA POSTAGE (PAY $36.64 & PAY TOTAL NOW (TOTAL $49.63 PAY) - THANK YOU!!! and separately messaged asking for a refund.
I had already told them that the shipping price was as stated in the auction -- which in this case was around $5. Not a lot. The item sold for $14.99. So the numbers they are throwing around are more than item price + shipping combined.
So my question is : how does eBay charge international shipping? Is the international buyer seeing a different price than what I show in the auction? How would I know what that is? I'm charging just a few bucks and the item goes to a domestic shipping hub. But what is the buyer paying to get it the rest of the way to them?
Or was this person just trying to scam me? I already cancelled the sale and refunded them. Just wondering how international shipping charges show up for the buyer.

Mentor2 years agoIf you are using the ebay International Shipping, the buyer pays item price + domestic shipping + sales tax + international shipping + customs fees. You get item price + domestic shipping and send the package to the EIS hub. ebay sends the buyer an invoice for the international shipping + customs fees. They will prepare the customs forms and send the package to the international buyer.
If the international buyer requests a cancellation, you refund the item price + domestic shipping. ebay refunds the sales tax, as well as the international shipping and the customs fees.
