increased shipping cost after purchase completion
according to seller, the original shipping quote was much less than actual and he would like me to send money directly outside of eBay to cover part of the additional shipping cost. If I do not, he will cancel the order. I agree that the shipping cost is too low and would like to pay the extra but don't know how to do that within eBay's policy.

It is best to allow the seller to cancel the order and relist with the correct shipping cost so that you can repurchase. If this was an auction, the seller should relist as a fixed price listing for your bid amount, and then adjust the shipping cost in the listing so that you can repurchase immediately.
This method will keep all of the accounting straight, particularly if there are any after-sale issues.
