Question

IS it possible, at all, to speak with a person at this site. I have been unable to access the newly set up account, to change the user name they arbitrarily assigned to me, to change the password they didn't like, and I could go on. How does one speak with a human being?

According to your profile page you have already changed your username once in the last thirty days, so you will have to wait until that time is up to change it again.

Try signing out and signing back in to see if the username change is reflected.

Or you can use the Help & Contact link at the bottom of the page to request a call back from eBay. Use the "Contact us" link and follow the prompts for your issue and you should eventually wind up on a page with a chat option. Choose that, and the last option that appears in the chat window -- use the "See more" option -- should be "Contact an Agent" to request a call-back if you are in North America.
