Import fees
I paid $81.87 USD for a pair of Adidas shoes shipping from Canada to the U.S. The listing stated: “Due to U.S. customs policies, the buyer of this item will need to pay import fees to the shipping carrier prior to delivery.”
Because the listing specifically said the fee would be paid prior to delivery, I expected to receive some type of invoice or notification before the package arrived.
I’ve ordered items from Canada before and have never had to pay import fees, but I understand there are currently changing tariff/customs policies, so I did some quick research beforehand. Based on what I found, I believed any fees would likely be minimal, so I proceeded with the purchase.
I received tracking information, but no additional communication regarding import fees. FedEx delivered the shoes while I was home, but the driver did not knock or ring the doorbell. Around that same time, there was also news about tariffs being reversed, so I assumed the fees no longer applied. I even mentioned in my seller feedback that I was pleasantly surprised I didn’t have to pay import fees.
Then, a full week after delivery, I received a FedEx bill for $50.72. Had I known the import charges would amount to over 60% of the purchase price, I never would have purchased the shoes — or I would have refused the package at delivery.
Is there any way to dispute or reduce these charges through FedEx or eBay? I feel blindsided by the process, but I also don’t want the seller unfairly penalized, especially since the shoes are non-returnable.
