Import duties
I’m buying a wallet from Japan to US that costs $650. There was an option about paying import duties for $196 or I can defer. I don’t want to pay duties since I know this is under $800 but what if they hold my item?

There is no longer an $800 de minimis exemption on imported items. That was removed as part of this Executive Order: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/07/suspending-duty-free-de-minimis-treatment-for-all-countries/
Even though IEEPA tariffs have ended, the de minimis exemption isn't restored to $800 since Trump signed a new Executive Order https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/02/continuing-the-suspension-of-duty-free-de-minimis-treatment-for-all-countries/
So you will need to pay a tariff, and likely brokerage to collect the tariff.
$196 may be a good deal, or it may not.
I know the tariff will be at least 10% or $65 and brokerage may be $50-$75
