import duties
On a recent purchase from England, I was charged import duties of about $50. I don't remember being charged import duties on purchases before. Is this something new? It was for items over 100 years old.

Mentor3 years agoHi @godocsic
If you purchased an item that uses the Global Shipping Program … buyers pay import fees up front.
They sometimes pay fees that wouldn’t have been charged if the item had been shipped directly. Unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be done after the fact.
[I don’t know if this applies to your purchase.]

OP3 years agoYes, my items were sent using the Global Shipping Program. Thanks for clarifying this for me. I will be sure not to buy from a seller that uses that shipping platform again.

Mentor3 years agoWhat was the value of the items? You can generally import up to $800 per day with no import duties.

Mentor3 years agoIf you were charged at eBay checkout, then it is probably as @house*of*paws described - other fees, not specifically import duty.
When an item is sent by a carrier other than the mail, there is a brokerage charge - their fee to bring the item through customs. $50 sounds high on a $200 purchase.
Were you given any documentation on the charge? Or was it just added at checkout?
