Illegal Handicap Placards
I'm disabled and have been having difficulty finding parking available. Why is eBay selling illegal handicap placards? This is discouraging know eBay cares so much about profit that illegal items can be sold. I'm contacting law inforcement. How entitled and irresponsible to let it continue.

Mentor1 year agoHi @brite_eyess
Are you certain that you're seeing actual placards being listed? I searched for 'handicap placards' and only found listings for clear-plastic sheaths for 'protecting' placards.

There's more than one seller

Thank you for the links @brite_eyess . Neither of them were on an eBay website, however. They are ‘pretend-eBay’ sites.
When I clicked on each of the links, there was a notice that said:
External site
You are being directed away from eBay to an external site.
eBay shows that warning whenever we click a link that takes us off the eBay site to another website.
Where did you find those links originally? Were they in an eBay listing?
If you found them in a listing, I may be able to get them removed by eBay staff.

·1 year agoActually, @house*of*paws , the links do resolve to ebay.com links, they're just some form of link shortener I haven't seen before (possibly from the eBay app?). These are the two items they linked to:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/135757656502
https://www.ebay.com/itm/115877202573
@brite_eyess I actually went ahead and reported both of those listings, but I got the same response on one of them so far that it was not found to be in violation. I'll see if I can bring it to someone's attention.

Mentor1 year agoThanks @jonathanbrightlight . I’m on my iPhone and can’t look at links very well.
Do you have the names of the eBay staff that works with mentors? That’s who I was going to @ tag to report the listings if they were on eBay. They were able to remove other banned listings that weren’t removed by reports.

·1 year agoI usually tag @kyle@ebay @devon@ebay and/or @elizabeth@ebay . I feel like there may be at least one more now, but those tags should help here!

Mentor1 year agoThanks! I can never be sure I'm remembering the current eBay staff's names. 😳

Hey @jonathanbrightlight! Thank you for tagging us and we will get these examples over to our Trust and Safety team for review.

·1 year agoI just looked again after my previous post. One of the listings has been removed. The other, in the description, says DOES NOT COMPLY WITH STATE REGULATIONS.

·1 year ago@house*of*paws , @jonathanbrightlight ,
those tags would not be legal in Florida; ours looks completely different. Someone would still get a ticket with those.

They are completely different from California placards as well. Each has its own ID … as well as an expiration date.

OP1 year agoYes, they are not government approved but it is still illegal to use them. So selling them, even though fake, they are promoting illegal use of them. It's illegal to use any handicap placards unless prescribed by a doctor. The one auction even promotes the use of them to secure a parking space. They are being promoted for illegal use. Anyone found using them will get ticketed because they're illegal.

OP1 year agoThank you for taking the time.
How is selling items that promote illegal activity not be against eBay standards?
jonathanbrightlight
·1 year agoOh, it is against eBay policy, as seen here, at least by my interpretation (that specific item is not called out directly, but could fall under multiple line items in that policy): https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/government-items-policy?id=4318&st=3&pos=1&query=Government%20items%20policy&intent=government&lucenceai=lucenceai&docId=HELP1254
That doesn't mean that the process of reporting it will always go smoothly, however, as we've discovered here.

They're only replaceable and issueable through a state's DMV

OP1 year agoThose items I'm seeing listed on eBay.
Now I'm concerned why the links are not on eBay for you. My account was hacked previously. They even were accessing my PayPal account. Ebay did nothing about that either. Claimed the person's eBay account that hacked mine was a legitimate seller. That seller was eventually removed for scamming many others. Whomever is making the decisions is ruining eBay!! I will never shop there!!! I was only searching for handicap placards because a friend told me they were being sold. I'm concerned you don't see the auctions on ebay in those links I supplied.

·1 year agoIf I understood @house*of*paws correctly, I don't think they actually visited those links. Because of the format of the links, when you click on them, these boards give you a warning that you're visiting another website. It's a useful warning when users post links to completely unrelated sites, but should probably be modified to not warn about ebay.us links since that appears to be a legitimate link to the eBay website.

I did look at the links, but because I am on my phone … I couldn’t tell whether I was on a REAL eBay site OR one that was made to appear to be eBay.
I intend to look again when I get to my computer.
I would assume that one of the reasons they are banned is because they are counterfeit … and ALL counterfeit items are banned on eBay.
They LOOK fake … but that doesn’t mean that an eBay agent outside of the US would be able to know that. ☹ï¸
EDITED TO ADD:
I recently reported a listing for expensive jewelry where the seller clearly stated in the listing that he’d trade the item for sexual favors … an obviously illegal proposal. Neither an eBay bot … nor a live agent … understood the reason for my report and found nothing wrong with the listing .
Several other mentors reported the listing as well … and got the same disappointing response.
We had to contact a special eBay staff person who finally was able to get the listing removed within minutes.
eBay can sometimes be an exasperating site to navigate. 😖

Individual sellers list items and are responsible for their content and descriptions.
Every listing has a "Report item" link to alert eBay to policy violations.
brite_eyess
OP1 year agoI did report it. I received a reply a week later stating it is not against eBay policy.
It's against the law, though.
