    Identification?

Summary: yourmemories2 expressed frustration over eBay's requirement to provide a photo ID for seller verification, questioning its relevance to seller integrity and highlighting that this was not initially required at enrollment. eastlaneave and lady_madonna explained that eBay's policies are driven by legal requirements under "Know Your Customer" regulations to prevent money laundering. yourmemories2 remained dissatisfied, stating that the transparency around these requirements was lacking at signup and expressed a strong intention to leave the platform. jacbarcollectibles noted that such identification requirements are standard across online sales platforms due to legal obligations.

Ebay can not guarantee my integrity as a seller via a photo ID. Not to mention that a photo of me means nothing to my integrity through EBay because they don't know what I look like.
Why am I required to provide one for payment?
What I look like, how much I weigh, what my eye color or hair color isn't a statement of integrity.
Whether or not I can drive or travel also do not provide a statement of integrity.

Now let's add that upon my enrollment to sell this item was not asked for.

    Why do people accept this?

eBay is required to rverify members to comply with US law on "Know Your Customer" (KYC) and antimoney laundering rules.

I had to do this in October 2022, and again April 2026.

Then EBAY should be requiring this nonsense from the BUYERS who are the customers.
EBay's practices are CRAP and I hope that Ebay is watching.

eBay does require some information from buyers.

But the Federal Government requires eBay collect information about who is collecting money on eBay. It's to prevent terrorists from laundering money on eBay.

I wish it weren't so, but lots of money flows through eBay. It needs to be a safe marketplace.

As a SELLER receiving payouts from Ebay, Ebay must verify your identity with a government issued i.d. due to banking regulations since you are engaged in a financial transaction that is subject to the Customer Identification Program. This is a part of a financial institution’s “Know Your Client”  process that involves verifying a customer's identity and assessing their risk level. KYC helps businesses reduce the risk of fraud, money laundering, and other illegal activities.

    I'm over it and EBAY.
Had any of the issues I've encountered and had to hop through hoops for been clearly and concisely been addressed when signing up I would have run away without looking back.
EBay has no need for this information. They are not a financial institution.
As soon as the money is sent, I'll be gone.
EBay can kiss my lily white . . .

eBay is acting as a payment processor just like PayPal and other similar services. The law requires eBay to collect certain information from sellers. All online sales sites will also require this information so you will not be able to get around it.

You stated: "They are not a financial institution."

Adyen, the Ebay payment processor IS a financial institution.

"Adyen is a financial institution. It operates as a global fintech platform and functions as an acquiring bank. Holding banking licenses in the EU, UK, and US, it provides payment processing, acquiring services, and other financial products directly to businesses."
