I sold a graded card. The purchaser received it and messaged me that it was broken open
That the card was missing inside it. There’s absolutely no way this happened on my end. They sent me pics of the broken item. How do I handle this?

Mentor3 years ago@comic_arcade Was this card sent to the Authentication center?
OR shipped directly to the buyer by you?

OP3 years agoIt was a $50 card so im pretty sure it went straight to the buyer. I guess that doesn’t work in my favor. The case was completely broken and the card removed. He said that was the second time this happened. Not by me but in general.

Mentor3 years ago@comic_arcade Sorry that happened, so yes it's going to be on you to refund the buyer.
If you shipped with Priority Mail it comes with $100 insurance. If you shipped using 1st class but didn't insure it then you are going to out the money.
You can wait until they file a not as described refund request and then decide to either refund and pay returning shipping for the empty card holder, or refund without a return.
If the buyer files a refund request saying that the item is not as described then you need to accept the return and issue the return shipping label.
The eBay Money Back Guarantee overrules your returns policy. Your return policy only applies if the buyer files a buyer's remorse return: Doesn't fit, changed mind, etc.
If you do not accept the return willingly then the buyer can ask eBay to step in and forces a refund. You do not get your seller's fees back, you get a defect and the buyer may be allowed to keep the item.
If the buyer abuses the eBay MBG in some way then you can report them but it doesn't get your money back:
https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/resolving-buyer-issues/report-issue-buyer?id=4084&st=12&pos=3&query=Report%20an%20issue%20with%20a%20buyer&intent=report%20&context=9056_SELLER
Sellers have protection for return abuse if they offer FREE RETURN shipping on their listings OR if they are a Top Rated seller and offer 30 days or greater returns. The seller can then reduce the refund amount by up to 50% if the buyer sends a different item or somehow reduces the value of the item.
Seller protection:

OP3 years agoThank you so much for taking the time to respond to me. I really appreciate your help. I just sent the refund because I sent it first class and didn’t insure it. I get scammy vibes like he knows how to work the system. It is what it is at this point. One out of well over 100 sales it’s bound to happen. Thanks again!

Mentor3 years ago@comic_arcade BINGO!!! Yep, internet criminals know exactly how to work the system AND they have the benefit of working form the comfort of their own home, in their PJs, sipping on their
Starbuck's Mocha-Choca-Scamma-Lotte ...
They salivate when they see an item sent First Class, they probably have a stock picture of a cracked and broken case ... if you sent it in a bubble mailer that makes it very easy for them. Use a small box.

·3 years agoI don't think insurance would've paid for a broken case with the card missing. They would pay if the card was still in the case if your packaging was sufficient.
That's a good record if you're only scammed for I item out of every 100 sold. Setting aside 50 cents from the profits of each card is great "insurance."
