scanned the shipping label. When I check the tracking number on eBay for it's status it says "Shipping label created. USPS awaits item". I contacted USPS and was told that according to the tracking number, they never received the package. What should I do?

Next time stand in line and have the clerk scan your labels and leave with a receipt.
I am not sure how long it has been but IF they put your package on the bulk truck a scan should happen when it goes through the next bulk package DC. The systems are automated and scan and upload tracking to the USPS mainframe and that information is shared with the various venues, including eBay.
You can try pursuing a missing Mail Piece in a day or two but if UPS shows no record of receiving the package you risk losing a Buyer's claim that they did not receive their package. If they file that eBay claim you will have to refund them and hope that eventually tracking updates.
eBay launched a new Seller Protection for sellers who print their labels through eBay. If a Seller loses a Buyer’s claim that they did not receive their item and refunded the Buyer then eBay will reimburse the Seller IF the package is delivered later and tracking confirms the delivery.

All you can do now is wait a couple of days and hope that the package got scanned sometime after you left the package. In many instances the only tracking information is when the package is delivered.
