I clicked on "US Only"; product info says it's in Skokie, IL USA; after purchase, ships from India!
I've immediately contacted seller and have requested cancellation, but what can I do in the future to avoid this kind of awful situation? I thought it was coming from Skokie, IL. Product listing said "Location: Skokie, Il."

#1 and #2 will protect you from most problems including a seller that lies about their location.
Go to the listing and report the seller for location violation if the tracking shows it's coming from another country other than stated on the listing. The report option is on the right hand side above the description box.
Choose these options from the report screen>
Listing practices > Other listing practices > Item location misrepresentation
Since sellers in other countries do sometimes have warehouses in the US eBay does not know that the sellers are violating policy unless they are reported.
When shopping here are some tips for dealing with this problem:
#1 Check the sellers feedback page to see what country they live in AND what the feedback they have received says.
#2 Never expect a package sooner than the last estimated delivery date. If the delivery time is very long then it's most likely coming from another country.
#3 If you do make a purchase from a seller that lies about their location you are covered by the eBay MBG.

When the item is at least one day late you can file a refund request for item not received.
OR if the item arrives you can file an item not as described refund request. Reason doesn't match pictures or description. Doesn't match pictures or description. Item location is part of the description.
The seller will need to send the money to pay return shipping to your PayPal account. Do not pay return shipping and expect to be refunded for it as eBay has no way to force a seller to refund more than the original purchase price.
Returns to some countries must be shipped using PRIORITY MAIL no matter the weight or item price to have tracking proof of delivery. The tracking number must be entered into the request.
IF the seller does not respond to a request then you ask eBay to step in and help after 4 business days.

99% of sellers located in China refund without paying to return the item because return shipping is MUCH more expensive to China than out bound shipping that is subsidized by their government.

One brief followup question: the moment I saw it was shipping from India, I requested cancellation of the order (within a couple of minutes of placing the order). Can I relax and assume seller will honor my cancellation request (nothing has shipped of course), or did I make a mistake in requesting cancellation so quickly? Thanks again for improving my ebay shopping skills.

I don't think that asking right away makes a difference. I think that was the best thing to do though.
If the seller doesn't cancel let them know that you will be filing an eBay money back guarantee based on item location misrepresentation. The seller will have to pay return shipping and refund you 100%.
