I bought something by accident as a guest.

I bought as a guest and then realized I have a membership with ebay. Now I need to return that item I bought as a guest and I keep running into walls. They say I am registered and they don't find that item I bought. I cannot figure out how to get this returned for a refund.

Guest purchases are totally separate from your regular account purchases. When you made the guest purchase the email you received had special log in information that applies only to that purchase. So you need to find this email and use that log in to ask for a return.
