I bid by mistake on an online auction - is there any way to reverse the sale ?

I somehow hit a button to bid when I was posting a question on the chat of the auction and I just happened to be the last bid. I didn't find out until the next day that I apparently had won the auction. In this case I have no way of paying the cost which ran into the $16,000...

Is there any way to try and reverse this ?

By eBay policy auction wins cannot be cancelled. You can ask the seller if they are able to cancel the purchase on their end but it may not be possible. All you could then do is to not pay and receive an unpaid item strike on your account. One strike does not do much but you would not want to receive another strike within 12 months.
