I believe eBay is now throwing in shill bids.
I just got finished buying a watch. With 45 seconds left, I put in my high automatic bid at $211.37. I was then the high bidder. A couple bids came in, but I was still the high bidder at $177. I changed my high bid to $219.11, but there were no more bids. I literally watched the clock count down to 0 and I was the high bidder at $177. For a minute, it says “calculating the winner†or something, then I get the invoice…$211.37 + shipping and tax. What?!?! It counted down to 0 and the bidding was at $177. Then eBay decides to just pretend like there were other bids when there clearly weren’t?? This is a total scam. I very much considered cancelling the order, but felt it would be punishment to the seller when clearly he was not at fault. But this is messed up on eBay’s part throwing up bids that didn’t happen. And of course it’s next to impossible to get a human to respond, so what can I do here?

·2 years agoeBay doesn't shill bid. The "clock" on a listing is based on the clock on your computer and may not necessarily be synchronized to eBay time, if it is slightly off. Bidding is calculated to the microsecond (1/1000 of a second), as that is the increment that computers use. However, the displayed time is shown in much cruder increments that humans understand, like whole minutes or whole seconds. When bidding is over, eBay looks at all received bids and compares their bid times (down to the microsecond) to determine the winner. Some snipers are lucky enough to get in a bid at the last few seconds.
When you review the bid history and display automatic bidding, you should see how you might have been sniped or outbid. If you would like to provide the item number, one of our fellow sellers is expert at analyzing the bid sequence and can walk through that with you.
