I am trying to return an item purchased last week.
I purchased an item on eBay last week. I wanted to purchase it using PayPal Credit. I pressed the wrong PayPal button and the purchase went through PayPal and directly to my bank account. I filed with PayPal thinking that someone had taken my funds illegally. They investigated and found it was a legitimate transaction and closed the case. This is where I realized I had pressed the wrong PayPal button. Now I want to return the item and recover my funds. eBay says I need to contact the Seller. I sent a message to the Seller explaining why I wanted to return the item 5 days ago. I have not received a response from the Seller. I talked with someone from PayPal yesterday and was told that they couldn't do a return because I had an open case with PayPal which was filed the day after I purchased item and thought my funds had been taken illegally. I checked with PayPal and that case has been closed by PayPal. So I am back at eBay now still trying to figure out why I can't return the item I purchased for refund. I am looking for HELP!

OP8 months agoThe claim that was made with PayPal was that the funding for this item may have been taken from my account by some other party (other than PayPal). That was proven false by PayPal with an explanation to me. The claim I am requesting from eBay is to return the item for a refund. I don't know if it makes a difference with your reply or not, but just thought I would clarify that matter as they are not duplicate claims.
Thanks for your help.

Yes, I understood, but eBay’s guidelines do not make a distinction. I think they don’t envision such situations.

OP8 months agoSorry, yes I meant eBay, not PayPal which said they could not open a return.
I originally inquired with eBay about the funds going through my bank account. eBay told me I needed to contact PayPal which is what I did. That is when PayPal opened the case. After I found out that it was my mistake in the purchase I went to eBay to start a return and refund. I was told by eBay that I had to contact the seller. The seller had a 30 day return listed on his eBay listing. I sent a message to the Seller 5 days ago and have received no response. I contacted eBay yesterday, and they said they couldn't do anything because PayPal had opened a case. They told me to check with PayPal to get the case closed. I checked and PayPal has closed the case. I have come back to eBay to try and file a return and receive the same messages that they cannot open a return.

OK, that’s what I thought. It sounds like customer service just didn’t want to deliver the bad news - that even with the PayPal claim closed, you will not be able to open a return. At least that is my understanding, even though this is not the usual situation for a duplicate claim.
I don’t know why they would tell you to contact the seller - you do not need his agreement since the item was sold with returns accepted. If a return can be opened, you can do it without help from your purchase history. If PayPal just closed the claim, you might wait a day or 2 - sometimes info in eBay from other sites is slow to update.
I assume you have received the item so that it can be sent back if you do find a way to open a return.

Did you try opening a return request through eBay? You said PayPal said you could not open a return - did you mean eBay?
Once you go outside of eBay for assistance, eBay will not let you open a claim through eBay - I have never heard of an exception to this.
Before spending more time on this - is the item even returnable? Not all seller accept returns.
