I am a seller. Sold an item that got damaged by the post office. Why do i have to purchase a return?

Make sure you ask the buyer for photos of the outer packaging, the inner packaging, the damaged item, the shipping label, and set that all aside if the carrier asks to inspect it all. You refund the buyer in full, and then file an insurance claim with the carrier's website, uploading the photos the buyer sent you.

eBay did not ship the item so they are not responsible for any damages claims made by the buyer. If fact you do not want the item back since this will void any insurance on the shipment. When you get a claim like this you have the buyer keep both the item and the packaging so the shipping carrier can inspect these. It is not a requirement by the shipping carriers prior to them making any kind of insurance payment. You then make a full refund to the buyer since they are protected by the eBay Money Back Guaranty and do not have to wait for any insurance claim to process. You may or may not receive a payment from the shipping carrier if they determine you did not properly package the item for shipping.
