You start with WHEN you want it to end and depending on what it is and who the Buyers are you count BACK from that day and time with one of the following choices for Auction duration, two of the durations cost a fee:
1 Day (a $ 1.00 special duration fee applies)
3 Days (a $ 1.00 Special duration fee applies)
5 Days
7 Days
10 Days
Your starting price should be high enough to cover your Cost, eBay Fees and your Target profit.
I sell a lot auction style and back in 2016 eBay showed the splash page below about how well Auctions ending Sundays do. Mine typically end on a weekend day Fri-Sat-Sun.
NEVER use the Reserve price, you are charged a fee every time you list or relist the item.
I never use the Buy it now option, my starting price is high enough that if the item sells on one bid I make my profit, more bids means more profit.
I do NOT use the Best offer either, that only drives prices down.
You will most likely have to Relist an item several times auction style before it sells.
Auctions are best for more rare and or unique items opposed to everyday stuff.
I also do NOT use Auto-pay and I do NOT have cancelling for an unpaid item set for automatic. I can't assume that my selected End time is convenient for Buyers so I am willing to work with them if they need more time to buy.
