How to reach a person at eBay
Today I accepted an offer for an item. The item did not go to ORDERS but stayed on ACTIVE. This has never happened before. After some time I became concerned that someone else would bid on the item (still in ACTIVE) so I ended the listing. This is all very different than I have ever experienced. I have been selling on eBay for several years.
Buyer has not paid but the listing is now “PENDING PAYMENT†(I have an email saying this) but in my listings the whole transaction is just GONE.
I have reached out to the buyer and the item is inactive and remains in RELIST.
What should I do?
Wait for everything to clear through eBay? That could be never.
Ask the seller to bid gain and then reactivate when she can bid? Sounds dicey…and what happens to the other accepted bid? Could she be double charged?
I so deeply greatly wish that I could speak to a human at eBay about this.
Any help is very much appreciated.

eBay made some changes about a year and a half ago (if memory serves) on how listings with Offers are handled. Now what happens on a listing with an offer is the listing REMAINS on the Active list AND is visible to anyone and can be purchased at list price. If the Buyer with the Offer does not accept it fast enough someone else can come along and buy it ... so in basic terms, whoever pays first gets the item.
In your post, the way you wrote it makes it sound like it was an Auction with the Offer feature turned ON. For myself I have no clue why eBay made the Offer function available for auction formatted listings. It defeats the whole purpose of an auction which is designed to have the price of the item potentially go UP whereas Offers do nothing but drive prices DOWN ...
If you use the Auction format (which I do a lot) then my suggestion is as follows:
-Your starting bid price has to be high enough to cover your Cost, eBay fees and most importantly, YOUR profit margin.
-NEVER use the Reserve price, you get charged a fee every time the item is listed or relisted regardless of it selling or not.
-I NEVER use the Offer function on any listing so not on Auctions
-I do NOT use the Buy it now option on Auctions
-I typically have auctions send on weekend days
There are times when you End a listing that you will be charged selling fees even if a purchase did not happen. You can read about that here: Ending a listing | eBay

This is an odd feature of eBay right now.
If you send an offer to a buyer, (example through Offer to Buyers),
and the buyer counter offers,
when you accept the buyer's counter offer this happens.
1) The listing stays active
2) It is not in your pending payments
3) Your buyer CAN pay for it, and the listing will end
4) If someone comes along and pays full price before your buyer pays, the buyer loses out and it sells to the high bidder.
I am not exactly sure why it's structured this way, I think it is because the automatic payments on accepted orders.
I would contact your buyer to let them know the situation, and that you are willing to accept X from them.
I would relist the item at X without best offer and have the buyer purchase it and pay.
I don't think they will be even able to pay double.

OP8 months agoThank you! Ì actually don’t know how to list without it being an auction that also accepts offers — but I have sent a good note to my buyer and I feel sure it will get sorted.
Thank you for teaching me about the feature of it holding and giving others a chance to bid. I did not know that.
I really appreciate your help!

Below are two links on creating a listing. You can use the Format feature to change from Auction to Buy it now - Good til cancelled. The Buy it now listings will automatically renew each month on the same day there were created and listed until they Sell or you End them. For those you set the price the same way you would for your starting Auction price, make it the lowest you will take to cover your Cost, eBay fees and your desired Profit margin:
