How to lower the maximum bid on an item?

How can I lower the maximum amount on an item I am bidding on and am the current highest bidder? I do not want to pay as much as my current maximum bid, and would like to lower that amount. I am not trying to remove my current bid, only the automatic maximum

That is not how it works. A bid cannot be amended, except in a very specific situation involving a changed Reserve Price (in which case eBay automatically amends it). You placed the bid in the full amount of your "maximum bid" even though eBay is hiding the part of it that exceeds an increment over the underbidder's maximum bid.
