How does eBay Standard Envelope actually enter USPS tracking?
I ship trading cards using eBay Standard Envelope. Some show “Carrier Scanned,†others show no scans at all.
My local postmaster and clerks say they cannot scan ESE at the counter because it is First Class Mail, and I usually drop envelopes off in person.
Can anyone explain when or how ESE gets scanned into the USPS system, and whether there is anything sellers can do to ensure acceptance or reduce INR risk?

eBay Standard Envelope shipping (ESE) is metered First Class mail that does not receive the same type of tracking scans that packages do. It is not a standard USPS tracking number, and is only trackable via the eBay website in the buyer's Purchase History or a sellers Order History.
It is a form of contracted business metered mail (similar to other forms of metered mail, such as utility bills, credit card bills, etc). It will not get an acceptance scan from USPS at the counter or by the letter carrier. As the envelope is processed through the system any scans are recorded in the tracking information.
Metered mail is marked as delivered once it reaches the regional sorting facility, not the buyers address. It can take several days for the envelope to be delivered to the buyer after the delivered scan.
If a buyer files a not received claim, you do have insurance coverage and the claims process is outlined on this page: https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/shipping-items/setting-shipping-options/ebay-standard-envelope?id=...

OP8 months agoThank you Lisa. I've already been through the process of seller insurance coverage with a buyer. At first eBay denied my claim but later overturned that ruling (Thanks to ChatGPT suggestions!) I think the conclusion is that it is not fool-proof and you should expect to lose some money occasionally. I wonder what happened to that mis-directed envelope, however...

Mentor8 months ago@davebearpa eBay Standard Envelope is a Metered Mail shipping method and the tracking can only be read by the sorting equipment. You can't look it up on the USPS site like regular tracking you have to use this tracking tool> https://www.trackmyshipment.co/
If a buyer files a not received refund request then you can file an insurance claim to get your money back. See this link>

For future shipments I recommend dropping your envelopes in the metered mail box at your post office.
You can also review this post by a fellow Mentor that has screenshots of proper packing as the envelope must remain flexible enough to easily bend around standard coffee mug to be read by the sorting equipment. The example is for coins but the same rule applies for post cards and trading cards. A high volume card seller said that he uses a few sheets of standard printer paper around the card to protect it.
