How do you claim for items lost by Royal Mail?

I have had two items lost by Royal Mail in the last couple of weeks.

One as a buyer - am in contact with the seller re item not received.

The other as a seller - had a "not received" notice against me without warning from buyer. Have issued a full refund but would like to claim for lost item from courier. Cannot see how to make a claim for non-delivery now they have lost the item.

Ebay automatic system will only let me appeal against buyer not against courier who is the party at fault. Any help on how to make a compensation claim against Royal Mail would be appreciated.
