how do I tell them to not leave the item in front of the door?

The 'them' you have to tell are the shipping companies who deliver packages to your home. They each have a form you can fill out that directs them to WHERE you want packages left. [Unfortunately, not all carriers follow directions ... but most will (in my experience).]
Companies/sellers you buy from have no control over where carriers leave packages.

Mentor3 years agoAnd when you do leave instructions, tell them where TO leave the package, rather than where NOT to leave the package.

Mentor3 years agoYou can use the second line of the address to put a brief delivery instruction, but it's hit and miss whether the carrier will actually read it. As already advised, you can also speak with your mail carrier.
