How can I pay for new postage after my package was returned to the seller?

I purchased and paid for a backpack, and the seller shipped it to the address shown on the eBay order. For some reason, the address listed was the post office rather than my home address. I was unable to receive the package, and USPS is now returning it to the seller.
The seller did nothing wrong. Based on eBay’s policy, because he shipped it to the address provided with the order, he is not required to refund me. I understand that, and I still want the backpack.
Once he receives it back, I would like to pay the new postage so he can ship it to my corrected home address. Ideally, I would purchase a prepaid label using his address as the sender and my home as the destination, then send it to him to print.
Is this allowed, and is there a way to add the new tracking number to the original transaction? If not, what is the safest eBay-approved way for me to pay the additional postage without asking the seller to refund and relist the backpack?
I want to make this easy for the seller and ensure he is not responsible for the second shipping charge.

MentorAug 11, 2026 at 10:42 PMWhen the seller gets the package back, s/he can refund you the item price only, and then relist the item for you to repurchase, and this time make sure the SHIP TO address is accurate. ebay recently included a 15 minute window to make any corrections if you discover the error right away, but I do not know if this is system wide yet.
