How can I find out if seller gave me the wrong tracking number?
Hello,
An item I purchased on eBay did not arrive. I received a notification saying it had been delivered today, but it was not delivered. We were at home at the time UPS says they delivered it. I called UPS and they said that the seller sent me the wrong tracking number, as the name and address linked to the tracking number I was sent are not mine. UPS said they could not send a photo showing the item left on the porch and also could not give me the name and address of where the package was delivered due to privacy issues. Their site says the item was delivered to "Mary," but no one named Mary lives in our neighborhood.
When purchasing a label on eBay, eBay emails the tracking number to buyers, right? I received a few emails from eBay stating the package had been shipped to me and there's a "Track package" button in the emails that leads to UPS.com and lists the tracking number. I wonder if the seller purchased the label from a third party and entered the tracking number somewhere on eBay to send to me?
In any case, UPS won't help, said I have to contact the sender. I had some trouble with the seller when I purchased the item. It wasn't shipped within 5 days, I sent a message asking when it would ship, was told they were out of stock and would not have more for 3-5 weeks. I elected to wait and within one day, I got the message saying it had shipped (the name at the end was different from the earlier messages we exchanged).
I sent a message to the seller; no reply yet. If I do not receive a reply, what's the best way to proceed? They say they do not accept returns, so it I ask for a refund and the item eventually arrives, I won't want to pay for it (will buy it somewhere else).
I saw a thread here about the same problem, but the options at the link provided are no longer the same. The mentor advised to "report the seller using this process https://www.ebay.com/help/action?topicid=4022
Important, select "The seller has violated one of eBay’s policies" then "Other"
But I could not find "The seller has violated one of eBay's policies" at that link.
Sorry this is long.

I'm sorry that happened.
Good catch on eBay's changing the questions. I have fixed it below
1) If your name and address weren't on that label, ask UPS if they will put this in writing. Also, ask for the weight of the package using that tracking number. Follow the rest of the steps starting with 2 below:
FOR UPS:
You can usually find the weight and other details for UPS here:
https://www.ups.com/track?loc=en_US&requester=ST/
then click " Proof of Delivery"
The proof of delivery may have more details about the delivery site, and the weight. Screenshot that.
2) Then, report the seller using this process
https://www.ebay.com/help/action?topicid=4022
Important, select "Suspicious seller activity"
then "Other"
Explain that the seller is using fake USPS tracking numbers
Include these phrases
Don't write a novel, it's initially being read by a computer, that's why I want you to use those 3 specific phrases in the message.
3) Finally, contact Customer Service and inform them that the seller uploaded a "false tracking number" on your purchase. Request a refund.
Use the Customer Service that is on social media this way:
Just sent a private message to the page. Explain you have a fake or false tracking number situation.
Let me know how this goes, I've been burned a few times myself (including on Amazon), but I have been able to get a refund following this process.
There are additional steps to take if the above isn't effective, just come back and update me.

OP8 months agoThanks for the updated link. In the meantime, more problems have developed 😞
1) When I requested the seller send the correct tracking number, she instead issued a partial refund that I did not request. She said they do not have any more of the item in stock and took/stole $11.47 from the original purchase/transaction price I paid, including a shipping fee even though it was listed with "free shipping".
2) I searched for the item to see if anyone else is selling it and noticed she has listed it again. And it's listed with "free shipping" again.
Clearly seller is a scammer.
Shall I use the same link to report the ripoff scam to eBay and to ask for help in getting the additional $11.47 refunded or is there another way to do this?
Thank you very much.

Yes, follow the same steps to report the partial refund and ask for the rest of your money.
If it's not effective, come back for more advice.
