Hawthorne Village Cleveland INDIANS HO Train Set
Good evening all & Happy Thanksgiving Eve!
I have a Hawthorne Village Cleveland INDIANS (no, not the Guardians!) HO Train Set that I am looking to sell. I've been trying to get an idea of what this would be worth as it's for a name that is no longer used in MLB. One dome car commemorates the 1948 World Series Champions. I understand that these were so overpriced when they were issued. Was just trying to get an idea of what this is worth. Thank you in advance!

Mentor10 months agoHi @19ldm60
Below is a screen shot from eBay's product research Terapeaks search for the last year on sold items.
This is what I put in the Search window: HO Bachmann Hawthorne Village Cleveland INDIANS
This is not to say these are the only ones that sold but these were the ones returned in search.
Since I sell a lot of trains I was curious myself. Not sure how much of the set you have or if it has the original Styrofoam packaging, track transformer, etc. ???
I would have to say it is rare and as such if I had the entire set as asked about above I would put it up on Auction format, 10 days starting on a Wednesday evening. That would mean it would get two weekends of exposure and end on a Saturday evening. I might consider starting it between $ 150 & $ 200.
I would put RARE in the title too.
You might have to Relist it numerous times before it sells, I do that all the time on my auctions.

OP10 months agoGreat info! I have the entire set - 2 sets of track, DC controller, Dome Car commemorating the 1948 World Series champs, Cleveland Indians Dome Car, Engine, and the EMD F7A Locomotive. All in original styrofoam packaging with COAs. I was planning on selling it on FB Marketplace as it may get some local (I live about 50 miles from Cleveland) interest as well as pick-up. So, from what you sent (I understand limited search results), I've never done an auction here so I guess I'll have to research on how to do that regarding payment, shipping, etc. Thank you again so very much for responding! Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I like your idea of trying FB Marketplace and doing that first since you are in close proximity to Cleveland. One issue with shipping those large Styrofoam containers is that they are so large and the full set would be a huge box and expensive to ship. While you could break that down into two or more boxes the issue with eBay is this, while you can print up to 5 labels per transaction if a return happens eBay only issues ONE return shipping label so you would have to purchase any others and send them to the customers.
eBay's Auction format allows a Seller to select 1, 3, 5, 7 or 10 day durations. 1 & 3 days would come with a $ 1.00 Special duration fee.
NEVER use the Reserve price, they charge a fee for that every time the listing is relisted whether the item sells or not. For myself I also do NOT use the Buy it now option on Auctions, that price has to be at least 30% higher than the starting bid price.
The starting bid price should always be high enough that you would be willing to sell an item on one bid.
Good luck to you on that set.

Mentor10 months agoHi @19ldm60
Go to the eBay home page and type in search terms for the item you want to research. Then scroll down through the list of filters in the left column and check the box for Sold items. You can get an idea of what the item is selling for on eBay.

OP10 months agoThanks so much and I have done that. I tried reaching out to someone who had other similar sets for sale. They did reply only to ask "Do I know you? Do you know me?" I explained and never heard from them again. I don't want to overprice, but this is such a unique set, I don't want to sell it too cheap. Again, thank you so very much for your reply!

You're very welcome.
Sellers are typically reluctant to share that sort of information with you, not knowing your motives. You can also try google also to see pricing on other venues.
Happy Thanksgiving!

OP10 months agoI thought that may be the case, even when I explained that my intentions were not nefarious. I think I may try googling some local train clubs (I only live about 50 miles from Cleveland) to see if there may be some interest that way. Thank you again for your help!!!
