I recently put a bid on an item and I did not think I would win.

I logged back in after a day or so and found that I won. I saw at the top of the page it said that we have automatically charged your credit card and I looked to see that it was a master card. that is a problem I do not have a master card, after looking more indebted I noticed that the name on the card that was charged was familiar to me. It happened to be a person that I had worked for 2 years ago it listed the last 4 digits of the card charged. I immediately called this person and he told me they were already investigating the charge.

I am working on contacting Ebay and trying to find out how hoe this happened.

Please let me know if anyone else has had anything happen like this???????

According the the information I have about auto-pay for Best Offers, when auto-pay is on, you select your payment information each time, so this doesn't sound like it's working that way at all.

A few questions for you:

Before you bid, were you asked to provide payment information and to select a ship to address should you win the auction (in other words did you know upfront that auto-pay was even in effect)?
Have you ever made a Best Offer in the past where you were asked for this information.
Can you check your account setting at the link below to see if your former colleague's account is set up there? https://ppcapp.ebay.com/myppc/wallet/list
Could this have been a company card that you had from your previous employer that you attached or used on your eBay account?

I'm asking someone for help in looking into this.

After checking with eBay and consulting with @shipscript (thank you Ship), a fellow mentor who did rigorous testing on this over the weekend, it was confirmed that when auto-pay is in play, you have the opportunity to select your payment method each time you make an offer or bid on an item.

Here's an example (for making an offer, but placing a bid is similar):

eBay is still making refinements to the auto-pay process so things are pretty fluid and can change, but I wanted you to see how this is supposed to work at this point in time.

As for the charge to your colleague's Mastercard account, the only way I can see that happening is if you used that card somehow on a previous purchase long ago (maybe on an item for the office or you purchased the item for that colleague as a favor, using your account) and attached it to eBay or PayPal for that purchase. I would check to see, and get it removed. I can't think of another way that could have happened.

Wow! Iâ€™ve been seeing a number of posts like the OPâ€™s on different boards lately â€¦ all saying that the buyerâ€™s card was automatically charged upon winning an auction (or having an offer accepted) â€¦ all without prior warning.

The impression I was getting is that eBay may have requested payment info once â€¦ and then just used that info on subsequent bids/offers without the buyerâ€™s consent.

That is so different from what you and Ship have been told. ðŸ˜–

I just tested this again, and I was shown the full autopay-checkout screen on consecutive offers on two different items from the same seller. This was using a desktop browser. I don't know what happens with the app.

In any event, the buyer can choose payment method, shipping address, shipping method (if there is more than one shipping option), and discount coupons on the autopay-checkout screen. I have tested all of those features.

Have you seen the posts that say cards are being charged automatically? Do you think the OPs are mistaken? I don't know what to make of it.

eBay has been "experimenting" with requiring pre-authorization of payment for Best Offers for over a year and a half, adding more and more users into the test group required to do so (sellers can opt their listings out of it; buyers cannot opt out once they are assigned). Too many users were making offers and then not paying when it was accepted, and too many of those were scammers who would try to get the seller to text or email them to get their number/email address to send fake payment messages to.

Not sure whether or not they have officially made it permanent yet or it continues "experimentally." They have recently started trying it out on auction bids.

So that's why eBay automatically charges a card (or PayPal account or the like) when you have an offer accepted or placed a bid if you are in the group that is required to pre-authorize payment and the seller has not opted out of the program.

Were you required to provide payment information when you placed the bid? Did you ever use your friend's card to make an eBay payment in the past (e.g. bought something for him on your account with him providing the payment details)? What is the shipping address for delivery of the item (you are also required to specify that when you pre-authorize payment so the s/h and tax can be calculated for the amount of the pre-authoriztion.)
