Handling Online Returns and Seller Disputes
Summary: jay92boi shared an issue about returning a defective item purchased online. They received a refund but not a return shipping label, and the seller is asking them to pay for return shipping, promising reimbursement later. fashionsandbeauty4u and gosimus advised that once a refund is issued on platforms like eBay, the buyer is generally not required to return the item, and the seller should provide a prepaid return label if necessary. Both respondents suggested caution against paying for shipping without proper arrangements or evidence of the seller’s intentions.
Hey everyone,
I recently encountered an issue while returning a defective item I purchased online. The seller accepted the return and even issued a refund, but they never sent a return shipping label. Now, they're asking me to pay for the return shipping, promising to reimburse me later. I'm concerned about shipping costs and potential issues if the package doesn't arrive. Moreover, they've threatened to leave a bad review if I don't comply.
Has anyone faced a similar situation? How did you handle it? What are the best practices when dealing with online returns, especially in terms of protecting oneself from potential scams or issues with seller disputes? I'd love to hear your experiences and any advice you might have!

Are you certain that it was the seller who issued the refund? Do you remember doing something like clicking a link that asked eBay to "step in and help" or something like that? When eBay issues the refund – out of the seller's account, of course – they usually don't require you to return the item.
The seller might be sincere, just not very good at this, but on the other hand he might be trying to flim flam you. If the shipping is a negligible amount, you could take a flyer just to confirm her/his honesty, or you could insist that the seller pay for the shipping beforehand. But, the bottom line is, you are not obligated to do anything at all.

OP1 week agoThank you for your reply. I didn't get to the point of asking ebay to step in and seller confirmed they sent the refund. I maintained the entire time that I had the item packed and ready to ship back but would only do so when they provided a prepaid return label. At first they said they had one, but then they changed and said I needed to walk into ups and get one despite me not having any information to create the return label.

Unfortunately, the Seller is giving you bad information.
Once a Buyer has been refunded, eBay considers the case closed and you are not required to return the item.
If you are still willing to return it, it's the Seller that needs to send you a prepaid return label. They can purchase a discounted label on PayPal or Pirateship.
In the meantime, Sellers cannot leave a Buyer negative feedback.

OP1 week agoThank you for your reply. I still have the item packed and ready to ship but they refuse to provide the return label and continue to message me saying I need to pay for and create the label despite me having no way to without their ebay confirmed return shipping address. The shipping was not cheap when I purchased it.

You could reply to the Seller once last time and tell them that you are awaiting a return label. Then stop responding to them. If they continue to send messages about you paying for return shipping, there is a Report feature in eBay messaging. I would report just one message like that. Ebay can read the rest.
I'm sorry this is happening to you.
