Handling Fraudulent Charges on Online Platforms
Summary: universal-sales-center has encountered a fraudulent charge on their eBay account involving wire fraud across state lines, and seeks advice on whether to involve federal authorities like the FBI. They ask for insights on how others have handled similar issues and what steps to take before escalating the matter. fashionsandbeauty4u suggests checking if the funds were taken via a bank transfer or eBay account and recommends contacting eBay support for assistance, noting that Instagram support may not be available over the holiday weekend.
I've recently encountered a concerning issue with my eBay account: a fraudulent charge made on August 26, 2026, that processed without any action on my part. It seems to involve wire fraud across state lines, and whenever I attempt to view the order details, I am met with an ominous red box devoid of any information.
I'm pondering whether it's time to bring this to the attention of federal authorities like the F.B.I.
Given the seriousness of the situation, I'm reaching out to gather insights and experiences from this community. How have others dealt with similar issues? What steps did you take before deciding to involve federal authorities? How long should I wait to see if the situation resolves itself before escalating it?
Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated as I navigate this stressful situation.

If you see a purchase in your My eBay Purchase History that you did not make, you need to change your password ASAP and contact eBay.

If you see a purchase on your credit card statement that you didn't make with no corresponding purchase in your Purchase History, then you need to contact your credit card company (not eBay) ASAP so they can stop any further transactions and send you a new card. Someone somewhere got ahold of your credit card information and is using it to make a purchase on eBay.
You don't need to contact the FBI.

Ebay allows wire transfers in very limited categories. Those include vehicles, real estate or business equipment like heavy machinery.
Were these funds taken from your eBay account? If not, was it a bank transfer?
You could try to contact eBay Help and request a call back. Or message eBay on their Instagram page. EBay support on Instagram is normally available from 6am-6pm PST Monday-Friday. Since this is a holiday weekend, Instagram support may not be available until Tuesday.
