Got charged VAT twice on an item I bought

Question

Hi,I placed an order for an item from Japan. Upon paying for it I was charged the local VAT in advance (Switzerland, 8.1%). The ebay website stated that no additional taxes would be collected from me. However, upon receiving the item, DHL wants me to pay local VAT again, in addition to the customs duties and handling expenses. I'm ok with the later (though DHL is always too expensive), but I would like to be refunded for the VAT I already paid. What can I do? Thanks and best regards,Ricardo
