Freight shipping - costs

Question

I just can't find info on how to freight ship items, how to go to the ones suggested, how to figure out an estimated cost to buyer (especially when there's not one until it's sold. I've had to use Local Pickup Only and that doesn't go well.

Once I did some checking around and used various zips across the country to try to get an idea and the costs were $500 and up for an antique sofa I had listed for $400! No buyer would pay that, and I won't accept returns. How do sellers sell items and pay shipping that's that high and make any money? I'm an individual seller, not a company.
