final postage costs were different, why? only 10% or so higher, but not as agreed when I purchased.

You are located in the U.K. but have posted on ebay's U.S. based site's community. If you were searching on this site for items by sellers who will ship to the U.K. the shipping cost given can depend on whether or not the seller uses ebay's International shipping/Global Shipping program or not. It will show the shipping cost from the seller's location to the international hub but you are billed for the international shipping at check out.
If the item you bought was a Buy It Now listing, initially listed before October 5, 2025. The shipping cost will have gone up on that date, which is when shippers here started charging their Holiday surcharge, which runs into this month, and the seller may not have known to recalculate the shipping cost.
If your seller is also located in the U.K. then you should ask this question on your home site's community, www.ebay.co.uk
