False ITAR export warning when bidding on vintage firearm part
Hi, I am a U.S. citizen and have been in the USA my entire life and have always had a U.S. address for eBay for 26 years, yet lately I am getting an “ITAR†warning when I try to bid on a U.S. part for a vintage firearm. It’s almost as if my address was outside the USA so my bid is automatically rejected, but I don’t understand how to correct this as everything is always US based re my acct. Please advise.

Are you using a VPN, hotspot or Starlink network? Any of those can cause issues determining your actual location and might cause a problem buying in certain categories.
See if you can complete your purchase using a different network connection, such as by using the eBay app on your phone when not using your usual WiFi connection.

OP11 months agoWell, I usually bid while on a random cellular network via my cell iphone (AT&T) network, so not sure how to change location based on US-based cellphone towers in the USA. Based on this issue, eBay should default to using the users shipping address, as that is thee sole factor that dictates the ITAR issue (item can only be shipped to a USA address, etc). I appreciate the responses, but I’m not on a VPN, just an AT&T cellular connection, or if at home, a WiFi connection to a Verizon-based wireless router (Verizon Fios - their U.S. based fiber optic network). The ITAR warning is blocking legitimate transactions, but I can’t fix the issue from my endpoint….

But then overseas buyers would be able to get around ITAR export restrictions by registering an eBay account in the US and providing a domestic forwarding address. Looking at the network connection is a way to prevent that, though it may not be without its flaws, as in your case.

You should be able to complete a purchase using your Fios, I think. If not, try completing a purchase using a different WiFi outside your home.
If that does not work either, perhaps the issue is related to your account itself rather than your network connection. Perhaps try completing a purchase as a guest or using a different eBay account in that case.
