fake tracking number scam
I bought a product from a seller on eBay. It was never delivered. The seller provided false tracking information that eBay is relying on to deny my claim. My credit card company is relying on eBay's denial to deny my claim. I have proof from UPS that the tracking number used is fraudulent. eBay won't allow me to present it. This is an ongoing problem with eBay, as there are numerous Facebook groups complaining of the same problem with tracking numbers for other products delivered to the same zip code being reused fraudulently. The seller is no longer listed as a seller on eBay and is not contactable. eBay claims that since I contacted my credit card company about the problem that eBay will not review the case and closed it. I believe eBay is well aware of this scam and turns a blind eye to it so they can make money off the transaction and then stonewalls customers.

Mentor5 months agoOnce you go to your credit card company, the matter is taken out of eBay's hands at that point.
Prior to that you could have used Instagram to get a chance to provide your evidence to eBay.
Now you will have to provide your evidence to your credit card issuer.

Once you start a case with your credit card company, eBay can no longer help. Be sure you make it clear that this is a case of "false tracking" fraud, otherwise your credit card company is likely to treat it as a standard "item not received" case and defer to eBay's decision that relies on the false tracking showing delivery.
Here is how to deal with false tracking if you do not go to your credit card company first:
First, contact the shipping service used to determine if the tracking number corresponds to a delivery to your address. If the name and address on the package is not yours, you may be the victim of "false tracking".
One option to deal with "false tracking" is contacting eBay via social media, specifically via Instagram. If you can get documentation from the shipping service that the tracking number is not associated with your name and address, you may be able to contact eBay via Instagram direct message, mention false tracking, and get a chance to submit your documentation.
If you cannot get documentation or if that does not work:
Since false tracking allows a scam seller to win an "item not received" case, the next step would be to file a "not as described" return on eBay and be prepared to return exactly what you received if the seller provides for return shipping, or ask eBay to step in after three business days if the seller does not refund you or provide return shipping.
In the future, stick to experienced sellers with a long history and avoid new or unproven sellers, or sellers that show warning signs of being a potential scammer: drastic changes in selling behavior or offering deals that are "too good to be true".
