Exploring the Impact of Florida's 2026 Tax Holiday
Summary: falcatus1 expressed frustration that after purchasing an item on eBay, $11.31 in sales tax was incorrectly charged despite Florida's tax holiday on specific items. The participant attempted to resolve the issue through eBay’s customer service without success. fashionsandbeauty4u suggested verifying if the item was categorized correctly and advised contacting eBay via Instagram for better assistance. Despite providing order and item numbers, fashionsandbeauty4u noted that mentors cannot access account details and recommended trying the Instagram support channel for resolution.
I recently made an offer on an item that was accepted and immediately paid for. When I went to my order details, I noticed $11.31 was added to the total for sales tax. The problem is that my state of Florida currently has a tax holiday on hunting, fishing, and camping gear. My purchase was listed on the Florida Dept. of Revenue’s site as being tax exempt for this holiday that goes from 9-1-26 through years end. eBay should know about this holiday, as Florida had this same tax holiday back in 2025. I saw they received similar complaints last year about sales tax wrongfully collected. Three messages to customer service have not been responded to, and the AI person on the phone line is apparently unable to understand my question and simply disconnects. Any suggestions on how to get my wrongfully charged sales tax refunded, short of a class action lawsuit?

Right now, at least 20 states have tax-free holidays. Because an individual Seller may be selling an item that should qualify for tax exemption but is selling it from the wrong category, eBay will automatically charge the tax. This happens quite often with coins (wrong category).
If you would like to give us the Item Number, we may be able to determine why tax was charged. Or, you could message eBay on their Instagram page. That is staffed from Monday-Friday, 6am-6pm, PST.

OP3 weeks agoThe order # is: 01-15149-75900. Hopefully you can help me get this tax charge refunded, as eBay customer service has been nonresponsive. This is a four month Florida sales tax holiday for the before mentioned items. If the word is out that eBay is adding tax to these items, buyers will be looking elsewhere for their Christmas shopping. Not fair to sellers!

Thank you for responding. Unfortunately, Mentors can't look up a transaction by Order Number. We would need the Item Number.

Thanks again for responding. In looking at that listing, it seems that item would qualify.
Mentors are volunteers, so we don't have access to your Account. I would message eBay using the Instagram link I provided earlier. Please give the Rep the Item Number you gave me. They'll need time to look things up. As I mentioned, there are 20 states that do this so it's a bit complex!
Good luck and thanks again for your follow up with me.

OP3 weeks agoWell at least we are in agreement that my purchase qualifies as tax exempt. Unfortunately, I do not have an instagram account to pursue this. Are you telling me that eBay members have to go through Instagram to get to customer service? eBay needs to do better than this! Perhaps a better way to go is to simply dispute the wrongful charge with my credit card company. I now have plenty of documentation reinforcing my claim.
