Ebay's new verification - Sept 2026
Summary: jhutch.2012, an eBay member since 2012, expressed concerns about being required to upload a verification document like a driver's license or passport due to fears of identity theft. They were uncomfortable with this requirement despite having a long history with eBay and feel the existing information they provided should suffice. lady_madonna explained that regulatory requirements and security reviews, triggered by changes in seller accounts, necessitate this process. It's recommended that documents be uploaded through official eBay channels only. jhutch.2012 remains concerned about the potential risks of identity theft if eBay were to be hacked.
Hi all — This is jhutch.2012, I have been an Ebay member since 2012 as a buyer and seller.
I hoping a mentor can point me in the right direction and can help me staying safe online.
I am an Ebay customer and I also run a very small clothing and accessory store and have never ran across this strange verification process. And, I have been a valued member at Ebay.. Ebay now want me to download one of my verification documents: Drivers license, Passport, Birth certificate, government ID.
I call Ebay , trying to do a phone verification. I expressed my concerns: I do not download important documents online- fear of identify theft (In 2025 the USA Social Security was hack- nothing is secure). I have been with Ebay since 2012. Ebay has my Credit card information (used when I purchased items) and they have my checking account number and Ebay have deposited fund for the items I have sold for the last ten years.
I have used my credit card for purchases for vacation and items online with many different companies and those companies have never asked me to download verification documents - I Will Never Do.
I feel that it is really absurd now Ebay are asking me to send them verification documents after being an excellent Ebay member for 14 years.
Please give me some suggestions.
I would appreciate any help you can give me

OP1 month agoThank you for your time and email Lady_madonna.
1. https://www.ebay.com/help/contact?type=ContactUs&topicId=4000 is exactly where I was. First talked to an online agent, then an agent from Ebay called me. That person send me an email to sent what kind of verification I need to sent them, I was basically looping in a circle.
I need to sent my letter of complain and my concern to someone who makes decisions - not just someone who follows a script.
Where can I send my letter? Otherwise Ebay will be losing a customer and an excellent seller that been on Ebay since 2012.

Mentor1 month ago · EditedSorry to have to tell you this but you will need to comply with eBay's requirement to verify with a document. Millions of others sellers have provided documentation with no problems.

I have comply since 2012, 14 years.
Ebay has: It should be enough------
my Credit card information
Bank checking account
My Address
phone number
and 12 years of exceptional Ebay history as a customer and seller.
I have used my credit card for purchases for vacation and items online with many different companies and those companies have never asked me to download verification documents
I am extremely careful; If I give them my driver's license online and if Ebay gets hack, scammer can steal my identity, open fraudulent bank or credit accounts, buy properties or cars and create fake IDs.

Mentor1 month agoMarketplace rules, anti-money laundering regulations, and "Know Your Customer" (KYC) laws require eBay to collect identifying information from sellers. Regulations like the INFORM Consumers Act also force platforms to verify high-volume or changing seller details.
Sudden changes in your account—such as a new address, banking info update, or an unusual spike in sales—trigger automatic security reviews to make sure you are the real account owner.
Always upload documents through your official account notifications or your eBay Help Center rather than clicking random links sent directly to your external email.
Ensure the name, birth date, and address on your government ID match your eBay account and bank profile exactly, or the automated system may reject your documents.

OP1 month agoThank you very much for all your time and info.
I think I may have to get an Employer Identification Number (EIN) through my state and that will be the buffer for doing business online.
Ebay was hacked 10 years ago that compromised the personal information of all 145 million of its active users at the time.
I feel that I have to be much more careful on the World Wide Web.
Thank you Again
