Ebay's idiotic new feedback policy
What **bleep** at Ebay decided it was a good idea require buyers to leave a rating for a purchased item if they want to leave feedback for a seller? How can one leave a rating for a book or gift that hasn't been read or opened, and for which the 60-day feedback window will have closed by the time it is? This is the dumbest policy move I have ever seen from eBay, and there have been many. In protest, I will begin leaving one-star ratings for every product I purchase if a rating is required before I can leave feedback for the seller.

First, THANK YOU for posting about your displeasure with another unnecessary and confusing change that eBay veiled as an enhancement to the Buying experience. As @inceptions mentioned, the best thing to do is use the Comments or Tell us what you think link on the Feedback page.
eBay runs tests on a regular basis and hopefully this will be one that fails. Since they seldom listen to what Sellers think about a change before they implement it they should honor Buyer complaints more so any time you can put towards complaining to eBay (who made the change, NOT Sellers) would be appreciated.

Mentor2 years agoHi @interzone_records
There are posts all over the boards from members who wholeheartedly agree with you. But please don't harm the seller by leaving one star in protest for a dumb move made by eBay.
Instead, go to your feedback page and click Comments? on the right side of the page. eBay is requesting feedback about photos, but ignore that part and enter your comments about this change in the comment box which appears after you click Send. You'll have to shorten your comments a bit as there is a character limit.

OP2 years agoThanks, but I didn't say I would leave a one-star rating for the seller. I said " I will begin leaving one-star ratings for every product I purchase if a rating is required before I can leave feedback for the seller."
I clearly stated "product," as the target of the one-star review, because Ebay is forcing me to rate that before I can then move on to leaving feedback for the seller.

Mentor2 years agoHi @interzone_records
Leaving a one star rating even for a product does harm the seller as the seller is trying to sell that item.
Moderators, not AI, will edit posts to remove offensive words. You can tell when a post is edited by a moderator when you see this:
**bleep** is used to replace any word a moderator deems to be offensive. There's not a variety of substitute words used based on degree of offensiveness. To avoid bleeps, just don't be offensive, and your posts won't be modified. 😊

OP2 years agoWell, my one-star rating doesn't harm the seller because I purchase out-of-print blu-rays and/or CDs. The seller never has more than one of them to sell, so if I am leaving feedback, they are "out of stock" for that item and will not be harmed.
My problem with the moderator edits is that I was not informed that my words have been changed. It would be courteous to do so.
For the record, I only ended up in this forum because I went to Ebay's "contact us" page and they offered no option to offer direct feedback. That interface specifically routed me here, so it is clear this is where Ebay wished me to comment.
Lastly, no one I know, and I was a magazine editor for 20 years, thinks the word "moronic" is offensive. The fact that anyone would have an issue with such a common word borders, ironically, on the moronic...

I believe you wrote you were going to give one-star ratings for everything you purchase going forward. That will harm any seller selling the same product.
Sorry, but most people would be offended if someone called them stupid or of low-intelligence which is the definition of the word in question.
Members receive an email when a post is pulled or edited for a violation of community rules.
At any rate, an appropriate action would be to provide feedback to eBay as I suggested earlier so they know your thoughts. The more members who do this, the better chance of having this change reversed.
Hope that helps.

OP2 years agoI appreciate your concern about other sellers, but I reiterate that the sort of stuff I purchase here is generally so rare that I will not see the item being sold by any other seller for months, if ever. I'm not leaving one-star reviews on blenders or best-selling books.
"Sorry, but most people would be offended if someone called them stupid or of low-intelligence which is the definition of the word in question."
That's the idea. I want the party at Ebay that thought this new policy was a good idea to understand their obvious error. Knowing that they are likely a victim of the Dunning–Kruger effect should help them make better decisions going forward.
"Members receive an email when a post is pulled or edited for a violation of community rules."
Really? I did not receive an alert when a moderator changed my text. This is what I was complaining about, for reasons already explained. I did receive an email when one of my posts is deleted by a mod.
"At any rate, an appropriate action would be to provide feedback to eBay as I suggested earlier ..."
I agree. And I attempted to do so. The first thing I did was try to contact Ebay and, politely, tell them how their new policy was problematic. The site made it clear they weren't interested in feedback because they shuttled me to this forum. Ebay purposefully designed the site to have no direct feedback option in the "contact us" area. I appreciate that you outlined some other procedure, above, for offering feedback, but I don't know what incentive I have to do so when it's clear Ebay isn't interested.
