Ebay shipping shows high prices causing lack of sales
Recently I have noticed eBay prices for shipping showing up really high to the potential customer which is causing them to just go on by my listing. When sales are made, I pay for the shipping label but it is usually a small fraction of what the customer paid. What is going on? Is eBay trying to get all sellers to include free shipping? It seems like there is something going on. I had a potential buyer email me and ask why the shipping costs were so high-almost $200 to ship a $180 product from one state to another not too far away.

Mentor2 years agoThe cost of shipping is in no way related to the cost of the item. It is based on the size and weight of the package, the class of service, and the distance between you and the buyer. check to make sure you have entered your parameters correctly if you think there is an error.
Also, eBay calculates shipping based on the retail rates. When you buy your label, you receive a small discount (which can cover your handling costs). You can pass along all or part of the discount to the buyer by changing your settings here:

OP2 years agoThe price of the item is not the issue, the problem is the shipping calculated is WAY off. So much so that if I just went to the fedex or UPS app and created a shipment from my address to the buyer, it would be less than half the cost shown in the eBay calculator. I was selling an item for $180 and the shipping for someone in a nearby state was shown to be over $200. Heck even if I shipped it to California or Alaska it would be less than $80. Something is wrong with the calculator. THankfully I got a message from a prospective buyer who said "youll never sell that with those shipping costs!' So people are going to my listings, looking at the items for sale, seeing the shipping costs and going on to another listing. This is not right! eBay needs to do something ASAP!

Mentor2 years agoI understand that the item price isn't the issue. Why I mentioned it is because you said the shipping cost is greater than the item price. Those two costs have nothing to do with each other.
What I advised is that you check the shipping parameter setup on your listing to ensure it's correct. Make sure you have entered the correct package dimensions and weight. Oversized items can incur extra surcharges.
However when I look at the $180 item you sold, the shipping cost to my zip code is $36.13 (I'm in the same state as you). The cost to the furthest zip code is $119.46. Nothing about that sounds incorrect. The further away the buyer is, the bigger it is, the heavier it is, the most it costs to ship.

OP2 years agoYou'll be happy to know I figured out what the problem was, which is why it shows that for you. My shipping settings were all wrong. Several minutes on the phone with eBay to look over my shipping settings and I was able to get the eBay discounted shipping price for my buyers. Also, there is a glitch in my shipping policy and they are looking into it. It is supposed to be showing them the economy shipping first, it is defaulting to the highest price shipping. THanks for the help.
