Ebay sends me incorrect notices telling me that a new unknown device is using my account .
Ebay keeps sending me incorrect notifications that a new unknown device is using my account. However it is always me using the same device.
I know that ebay wants me to use a passkey but is there any other way than that to get Ebay to stop sending me these false and unwanted notifications?
There is no way on any of my communication preferences to specifically opt out of receiving such notices.
And I hope that no one is going to reply that passkeys are better than passwords. I fully understand what passkeys are and how they work. And yes, if it is absolutely necessary to get Ebay to stop harassing me with these annoying notifications I will be compelled to install one.
Since I am not using a VPN or a proxy server or a rotating ISP address Ebay should be able to identify my device. And if it claims that it cannot I must assume that this is because they wish to force me to install a passkey against my will.

Those emails are generated automatically based on the cookies in your browser and the IP-address used. If you erase your cookies (or block them), change your IP-address or use a different browser or device, or if you use a VPN, hotspot or Starlink network, or certain kinds of privacy software, you can expect such a message the next time you sign in to eBay.
If you are not blocking cookies, you may have a problem with a corrupt cookie. If you suspect that, try manually erasing just your eBay cookies, then sign in again and see if the problem recurs the next time you sign in. Or try a different browser.
I do not think the issue is related to Passkey; I do not use Passkey and I do not see those automated messages unless I erase my eBay cookies or sign in to an unfamiliar country site.

OP5 months agoCookies: yes, I suppose that might be a factor. I certainly do not mind leaving an Ebay cookie on my device. And it is definitely interesting that you do not have a similar problem even without a passkey.
So when you say cookies, you mean on all 3 of my browsers, as the same situation occurs on which ever one that I am using. You are specifically referring to browser cashed cookies only?

Mentor5 months agoIf you are having the same issue in multiple browsers that makes it less likely the problem is with a missing or corrupt cookie in each browser, unless each of your browsers is set to erase cookies when you close it, or if you are using a cleaner program that periodically erases all your cookies.

OP5 months agoYes, I have all of my browsers set to delete cookies upon closing out. Waterfox give the user the ability to whitelist a specific site such as Ebay from cookie deletion, which I have now done.
However with Slimjet and Chrome there seems to be no way to make an exception for a specific site. It appears that you must either erase or retain all cookies.
I would prefer to erase most cookies after closing out each time if at all possible.

Mentor5 months agoYou can certainly delete all cookies or use a private or incognito browser window to prevent cookies from being saved.
The trade-off is that you will receive those "new device" messages every time you sign in again after deleting cookies.

OP5 months agoYes, it seems that it may be necessary to retain the cookies in 2 of my 3 browsers. It would of course be better if all browsers gave users the ability to whitelist specific sites for cookie retention when the others are deleted. At least however I have one which so far appears to allow users to do this. Others probably would do that as well.
