eBay overcharging for dispute refund
I recently sold an item and proceeded with the normal shipping process the very next day. After I shipped the item I noticed I had a message from eBay saying they closed the buyers account. I inserted a portion of the message from eBay below with the buyers name redacted. The item sold for $280 plus $15 in shipping covered by the buyer.
Here’s what you should do
- Don’t complete the sale or ship the item to (redacted) if you haven’t done so yet.
- Don’t communicate any further with (redacted), especially if they get in touch with you outside of eBay.
- If (redacted) requests a payment or refund, don’t send any money without contacting eBay first. If payment was processed, a refund has not been issued yet just in case you’ve already shipped the item.
- If you already sent the item, contact the shipper to find out if you can stop the delivery and have the item returned to you.
- If your listing has ended, you can relist your item.
I followed the instructions in bullet point 4 above and requested a package intercept from USPS. The intercept was successful and the item has been returned to me. The buyer filed a dispute which I completely agree with them receiving their funds back. However, eBay is now wanting to charge me for the $295 and an additional $20 for a "dispute fee".
It is my belief I should not be required to pay the "dispute fee" of $20 and the difference in the normal eBay 13.5% fees for selling the item. On top of that I had to pay an additional $17.50 to USPS for the intercepted package. I was following the directions provided to me by eBay. Essentially if this stands I will be out $77 between eBays fees and USPS charges for the interception. I whole-heartedly agree the buy should be refunded, but I shouldn't have to bite the bullet for eBays mistake.
If it will help with the appeal I have supporting documents for everything mentioned above as well. Has anyone had a similar experience/any advice for appealing this decision?
