EBay no longer honours PayPal preferred method nor allows me to change PayPal payment source
Recently (I did not see this a couple months ago), EBay stopped taking me to PayPal to approve transactions; it just silently happens.
I sometimes want to pay using a specific method; this no longer seems to be permitted. No matter what I set as my PayPal preferred method, it ALWAYS gets charged to a specific card I have associated with my account. Other places let me choose which card (and whether to pay PayPal's inflated exchange rate or my card's exchange rate for foreign currency). EBay no longer seems to permit this.
What do I need to do to change the EBay preferred (demanded?) PayPal payment method?

Mentor1 year agoFor auctions or offers if the seller requires a payment method in advance, you may have to provide a payment method. That payment method will be remembered by eBay for the next time you need to provide a payment method for an auction or offer, and that method will be indicated on your eBay Payments page.
If you mean that when you check out of eBay and select PayPal, you are sent directly to a specific PayPal account without entering username or password and you do not want that to happen, sign in to that PayPal account outside of eBay and use the Gear icon to go to Settings and choose Security, then check the "Manage your Logins" and "Auto Login" sections and either delete those entries or select "Log out of all devices".
If you are unable to sign in to that PayPal account directly, try using a different browser (or a private or incognito browser window) to see if that gives you the option to select a PayPal account.
If you mean that when you check out of eBay and select PayPal, you are not able to choose a specific payment method in your PayPal wallet but one is automatically selected for you, in that case go to your eBay Payments page in your eBay account and delete the entry for PayPal that appears there.

The next time you check out on eBay and choose PayPal, you should be sent to your PayPal wallet page and given a chance to pick a specific payment method.

OP1 year agoThank you. The only thing I haven't tried was deleting PayPal from EBay's side. If I have to do that every time I want to pay with some other method, that ends up frustratingly tedious (I frequently choose which method based upon various criteria). I buy irregularly via EBay, so I do not know when I will next test it. I will update here (if still possible) at that time.
I always log in to PayPal on my browser separately in another window or tab before going to anybody's 'pay with paypal' link because I prefer to log in on the known page rather than someone's URL-hidden slimline no-controls popup window. It's too easy to fake things. Normally when I do this, paying via PayPal (even in the stupid popups) lets me choose how I want to pay. It worked this way on EBay in recent months. If I'm already logged into PayPal and the popup prompts me to login to PayPal again, I terminate the browser, reboot, and go somewhere else to buy what I was buying.
I don't use a device that keeps persistent logins. Cookies, tracking, cache, etc are all purged every time I close the browser. This means I should have to log in every session. Even most stuff that the browser demands to be persistent is put on a RAMdrive and is lost on every reboot (generally multiple times per day).
I have enough complaints about PayPal automatically 'adopting' itself to autopay any charge I have with everybody (among other matters), but EBay choosing the payment method 'for me' (even if based on a prior transaction) without offering an option, ignoring what I have set in my PayPal preferences, and not offering a way to set it on EBay's site is frustrating.

I believe that PayPal entry is only added back if you specifically choose PayPal as your default saved payment method for offers or auctions; if you choose a credit or debit card for those, you can continue to choose PayPal at checkout for other transactions without having to delete a PayPal entry and then choose the payment source in your PayPal wallet.

OP1 year agoLooks like deleting PayPal as a payment method worked; it permitted me to check out via PayPal and select my payment method.
I didn't set it as default, so hopefully it sticks a not-default.
Thank you.
