eBay needs to verify buyers without feedback!
For the second time in a few months, I have had trouble getting paid (at all) from two different buyers with zero feedback.
Not quite sure what they play games bidding, but I feel that eBay should verify new/zero feedback buyers somehow or other.

Mentor2 years agoHow would you propose Ebay "verify" a buyer?
Ebay verifies sellers because Ebay is also our money processor. The same does not apply for buyers.

They do verify them, when a Buyer registers their account OR purchases as a Guest they provide a payment method. Whether they use it or not is out of eBay's control.
Cancel on day 5 and select the reason "Buyer hasn't paid". They get a strike.

Mentor2 years agoAfter four days you can cancel for nonpayment.
Users with two or more unpaid item cancellations can be preemptively blocked by sellers using their Buyer Requirements settings.
You can avoid payment issues by listing for a fixed price with immediate payment required, and by not using offers.
All users start with zero feedback. If you know of a good way to determine in advance which users will pay and which will not, eBay would like to know your secret.

OP2 years agoI agree, not an easy fix. They could insist on say a 25% deposit to be able to bid which would be forfeited in the event they don’t complete a purchase. For newbies until they establish a positive reputation.

Even if eBay went along with the idea, that would not stop scammers from using stolen credit cards, or others from just claiming not to recognize the deposit charges and initiating charge-backs to get those deposit amounts back later. With a purchase, eBay could at least show where a shipment was delivered; eBay would have no real basis to fight a claw-back of a deposit amount.
eBay is experimenting with requiring a payment method to submit a bid or an offer if a seller insists on it, but this greatly complicates transactions involving multiple items, and prevents users from using things like PayPal credit or gift cards for certain transactions.

That is not a bad idea. For myself the number of UPIs over the years is extremely low and I sell a lot Auction style. That may have something to do with the categories Sellers sell in. But to your point on (0) or say low Feedback Buyers (say (20) or lower as a talking point),requiring a non-refundable deposit would weed out those who are serious and those who are angling for a scam or abusing the system.
Granted, there are times when a Buyer can't pay through no fault of their own.
