Ebay International Shipping via UPS tariff ripoff
I ordered a vintage fly-fishing reel from a seller in the UK. The seller opted to ship to the US via eBay International who then selected UPS International Package Services. The item arrived and the driver was expecting to collect $219.94 USD.... When I asked the driver about the charge, he indicated it was tariff-related and that I could reject the package which I promptly did. He indicated the item would be returned to the seller.
That said UPS tried to shake the seller down for the tariff fee threatening to destroy the item if fees were not paid. He refused to pay up so we presume the item was destroyed. In the interim I received an invoice from UPS for the tariff amount. The invoice clearly identifies eBay as the shipper and shows the item was subject to three duty classes with a combined tariff rate of 205.94%! How is this possible? As I have no contract with UPS, eBay
shipper, and UPS has destroyed the item, the invoice went in the bin.
The seller has been awesome with regular communication, and even sent me a partial refund, that I did not ask for. That said I am still out $100 and neither of us have the item.
Insult to injury, I purchased a similar item during the same timeframe that was shipped UK Royal Mail which landed on the porch with no additional charges.
What should I conclude?
