Ebay gift cards

Question

I was sorely disappointed to learn that Ebay was no longer offering gift cards through other merchants. I found them to be a great way of spreading cheer amongst my family and friends. What was the reasoning behind them being discontinued and is there a likelihood that they will come back ?

Ebay started phasing out physical and digital gift cards as of August 3, 2026. Some stores may still have stock, but once that's gone, it won't be replenished.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of fraud with gift cards in general.

@caslo < I found them [ gift cards ] to be a great way of spreading cheer > I never buy gift cards, of any kind. Too many problems reported on these forums, not least among them is the hidden code getting scratched off along with the obscuring film. But that isn't my primary reason. My main reason is that a gift card restricts you to redeeming it in only the place(s) specified by the card, usually only one place. Instead, I give one or more of those universal "gift certificates" that are about six inches long, green on the back side, and a picture of a dead president on the front. They can be redeemed at any location in the United States, indeed practically any location in the world. Some people have told me they think giving cash is crass . .. to which I say, You can be crass to me all day long .. . JMO, I think most people would have a similar attitude. If giving cash makes you feel insensitive – or you fear that the recipient would feel that you're insensitive – you can always doll it up a little by gift wrapping it. You can use the box a new wallet comes in, and you keep the wallet, or put the cash inside the wallet and present them together.

eBay seems to go back and forth on where their gift cards are available. For a number of years they were only available through eBay and then they made them available at various merchants. I have not seen any notice about this so it would appear that they have gone back to only making them available on the site. So you should be able to purchase them directly from eBay.
