Ebay gift card

Question

So I was trying to trade my 100 ebay card for something someone was selling but I didn't realize they were effing scamming me. They got new to stupidly send a pik of the receipt bcuz apparently you can just call and steal the money as long as you have that little did I know. I know I'm stupid I should have known better. But how can I get the money back is the even possible

Hi @b85-93 I'm sorry this happened. How were you to know? If not for these boards, I wouldn't know about this scam. You can make a report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, known as IC3. IC3 is part of the FBI. It doesn't have to be a large amount in order for them to help. There have been many reports of IC3 recovering even very modest amounts. The thing is you must report it. You have the email or phone number or however you were communicating with the scammers, and you include all that in your report.

Take screenshots or pictures with your phone of the listing on the site you found it on, craigslist, Face Book Marketplace, eBay, and then if you haven't already, report the listing to the site it's on. Good luck!

And just so you don't feel so silly, you are far from alone. Honest people just don't think in those terms.

@b85-93 < I know I'm stupid I should have known better > Stop it. Don't beat yourself up. It isn't necessarily stupid when you just didn't know something. Now you do know. A lot smarter people than you and me both have fallen for this scam. Sorry that it cost so much to learn the lesson. Good luck.

If you reveal a gift card number to someone, they can spend the money on the card, and there is nothing you can do after that happens to get the money back. That is why scammers specifically ask for gift cards, why they spend the money as soon as they get it, and why you should never reveal gift card numbers to anyone.
