eBay didn't charge enough for shipping for a multiple item order
I have Lego educational kits listed in a multiple item listing. Most people only buy one kit but a few have bought multiple kits. For one kit, the dimensions are 17 x 13 x 8 and the shipping is about $16. But for two kits, the dimensions are 17 x 13 x 12, which is $2 to $3 more than shipping one kit. I had combined shipping as my shipping rule to save my buyers money, which usually works out just fine when the items are somewhat small. But these kits are big and there is no way I can fit two kits in the same size box as I can one kit.
Apparently, eBay only adds the combined weight of the two items but doesn't account for the increase in box size. I already talked to an agent and her solutions were not acceptable:
1. Contact the buyer and ask for the additional amount in shipping. I don't want to do that because it risks upsetting my customer and possibly having him cancel the sale.
2. Shipping by another shipping method that my customer did not choose and that doesn't provide free pickup (I cannot drive right now due to a temporary medical issue so pickup is the only option right now).
I suggested another option: eBay refund me the additional $2.82 since the problem was not caused by either me or my customer; it was caused by eBay not charging enough. The agent didn't say yes or no, but just went on to the two options she suggested. IOW, eBay will not take responsibility for this problem and rectify the situation that they caused!
My solution is to take combined shipping off my preferences and just reduce the shipping after the sale is made (either by sending my customer an invoice is he hasn't paid yet or refunded the excess if he has paid). What nonsense!
